Prayer Groups
“... in March 1979... all of us, of all denominations, of all sectors of society with different gifts and skills and roles and functions, brothers and sisters in Christ, met together and worshipped and prayed for the prisons and prisoners and looked to see what God would have us do... so with the unanimity of the entire group, Prison Christian Fellowship was launched.”
Sylvia Mary Alison
Since the launch of Prison Fellowship prayer has been the basis for all we do. Volunteers meet regularly (often monthly) together to pray for the needs within a specific prison. Many of our volunteers join the local prayer group as a first step into further prison involvement. Currently there are over 120 prayer groups throughout England and Wales.
Beyond praying many of these Prayer Groups are also involved in numerous activities within prisons including taking part in services, leading Bible studies and Alpha courses, prison visiting etc. Giving volunteers the opportunity to “see lives transformed” first hand. These activities operate under the authority of the Prison Chaplain. For those wishing to participate in activities within prisons basic training is provided.
